Hawaiian Electric submitted its Integrated Grid Planning document, laying out plans to expand renewable energy and battery storage across three islands as the utility pursues its 100% renewable electricity goal.
The utility filed one of Hawaii's largest energy procurements, seeking 500 megawatts of firm generation capacity on Oʻahu alone. This represents a substantial push toward the state's clean energy mandates. Hawaiian Electric will pursue solar, wind, and battery storage projects across Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi Island, and Maui to meet growing electricity demand while phasing out fossil fuels.
The plan addresses a critical challenge for island grids: intermittency. Battery storage systems will stabilize renewable power and ensure reliable service during peak demand periods. The scale of this procurement reflects Hawaiian Electric's commitment to replacing aging coal and natural gas plants with distributed clean generation.
Hawaii requires utilities to source 100% of electricity from renewables by 2045. Hawaiian Electric, which serves about 95% of the state's population, operates the largest renewable portfolio in the state. Current renewable penetration stands at roughly 40% across the utility's service territory.
The Integrated Grid Planning process requires Hawaiian Electric to demonstrate how it will reliably serve customers while meeting clean energy targets. Regulators at the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission will review the filing before approving specific projects and power purchase agreements.
Island utilities face unique constraints. Limited land area and geographic isolation mean Hawaiian Electric cannot simply import cheap renewable power from the mainland. The utility must develop local resources. Battery storage costs have declined sharply, making large-scale systems economically viable for the first time.
