CS PowerTech, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar, opened the first phase of a heterojunction (HJT) solar cell manufacturing facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The factory will employ over 1,200 workers and represents a major expansion of domestic solar panel production capacity in the United States.

HJT technology combines crystalline silicon with thin-film layers, achieving higher conversion efficiency than conventional photovoltaic cells. This manufacturing advancement allows panels to convert a larger share of sunlight into electricity, reducing the material and space required per unit of energy output.

The Jeffersonville facility positions CS PowerTech as the largest silicon photovoltaic manufacturer operating in the U.S. The company framed the opening as strengthening American manufacturing infrastructure and supply-chain resilience. Domestic solar production capacity remains constrained relative to U.S. installation demand, which reached 16.2 gigawatts in 2023 according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. The majority of panels installed in America still come from foreign manufacturers, primarily Chinese firms.

Tariffs on imported solar equipment have driven recent investments in domestic manufacturing. The Inflation Reduction Act and other federal incentives have reduced barriers to capital-intensive production facilities. Indiana's selection reflects state-level tax incentives and existing manufacturing workforce infrastructure in the region.

HJT technology carries higher production costs than conventional monocrystalline panels but commands premium prices due to superior performance. The technology also enables bifacial configurations that capture reflected light from ground surfaces, further boosting energy generation.

CS PowerTech's expansion signals confidence in sustained demand for solar installation across residential, commercial, and utility-scale segments. The factory's full buildout could add substantial manufacturing capacity to the domestic market.
