# Most "Park Outside" Warnings Target Gas-Powered Vehicles, Not Electric Cars

The narrative around EV fires took shape over a decade ago when early Tesla battery fires generated intense media coverage. Those incidents were indeed dramatic. But recent analyses of actual parking restrictions and fire department data show a starkly different pattern than popular memory suggests.

Insurance companies and property managers issue "park outside" warnings when vehicles present elevated fire risk. These directives protect other cars and nearby structures from fire spread. Records from major insurers and parking facilities indicate that gasoline and diesel vehicles account for the majority of these warnings. Internal combustion engines generate extreme heat during operation and require fuel storage that, when breached or overheated, ignites rapidly and unpredictably.

The disparity reflects basic physics and chemistry. Gasoline fires spread faster than lithium-ion battery fires and burn at higher temperatures initially. A ruptured fuel tank can ignite within seconds. Battery thermal runaway, while serious, typically occurs more slowly and produces distinct warning signs: smoke, odor, heat visible on thermal cameras. This progression gives firefighters time to respond and evacuate people before catastrophic failure.

Modern electric vehicles incorporate multiple thermal management systems specifically designed to prevent fire propagation. Tesla, Chevrolet, Hyundai, and other manufacturers have integrated battery monitoring systems that detect cell degradation before dangerous conditions develop. Warranty data from these companies shows battery fire rates remain statistically rare relative to gas vehicle engine fires.

The Federal Highway Administration recorded approximately 171,500 highway vehicle fires annually in the United States, with data skewed heavily toward combustion vehicles. The National Transportation Safety Board has documented far fewer EV-related incidents despite exponentially higher EV adoption rates over the past five years.

Yet the perception persists. Search engine data shows continued public concern about Tesla and EV fires despite declining actual incident rates. Social media algorithms amplified those early viral videos repeatedly, creating durable misinformation that contradicts current evidence.

This disconnect matters for policy and insurance markets. Some insurers continue charging higher premiums for EVs based on outdated risk models. Apartment complexes impose blanket EV charging restrictions despite statistical evidence that combustion vehicles pose greater communal fire risk. These restrictions slow EV adoption precisely when rapid vehicle electrification remains essential for meeting climate targets.

The 2024 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment reaffirms that transportation electrification must accelerate to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Removing artificial barriers to EV charging and parking becomes economically and environmentally rational once actual fire data informs policy.

Moving forward, property managers and insurers should base parking restrictions on documented fire incident data rather than historical narratives. Electric vehicles have evolved substantially since those early Tesla fires. The risk profile has inverted. Directing vehicles to park outside, if warranted at all, should target the vehicles that data shows actually burn.
