Scientists and land managers in New Jersey are executing an emergency strategy to preserve coastal salt marshes as sea levels rise at accelerating rates. The Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor has become a laboratory for marsh restoration techniques designed to keep these ecosystems above water.

Salt marshes provide critical infrastructure for coastal communities. They buffer storm surge, filter pollutants, and serve as nurseries for commercially important fish species. New Jersey's marshes face particular pressure. The state experiences relative sea level rise of approximately 4.5 millimeters annually, nearly double the global average, due to both climate-driven ocean expansion and subsiding coastal land.

The institute's five-and-a-half acre restoration site demonstrates "thin layer deposition," a technique that deposits dredged sediment directly onto marsh platforms to raise elevation. Rather than removing marsh vegetation entirely, workers add sediment between 6 to 12 inches thick, allowing existing plants to grow upward through it. This approach maintains ecosystem function while building height to outpace rising seas.

The strategy addresses a narrowing window. Research shows that if marshes cannot accumulate sediment faster than seas rise, they will convert to open water within decades. The Wetlands Institute estimates New Jersey could lose 40 percent of its salt marshes by 2100 under current trajectory without intervention.

Other coastal states employ similar methods. Massachusetts, Delaware, and North Carolina have launched comparable sediment projects. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently expanded funding for coastal protection measures, recognizing marsh restoration as more cost-effective than traditional hardened infrastructure.

The challenge remains scale. Restoring thousands of acres requires sustained funding, dredging operations, and coordination across municipalities.
