Here's the unpopular take: we should pump the brakes on the global rush to restore forests through rapid replanting programs, at least until we know what we're actually doing.
I say this as someone who believes forests matter. Deeply. The recent spate of wildfires tearing through North America, the documented carbon emissions from forest degradation, the water stress cascading through river systems—these are real problems. But the standard response, which sounds sensible on its surface, may be leading us astray.
The response is straightforward: plant more trees, faster. Governments and NGOs are investing billions in reforestation campaigns. Corporate sponsors tout their tree-planting commitments. The logic seems bulletproof. Forests absorb carbon. Forests hold water. Forests protect communities. Therefore, more forests sooner equals better outcomes.
Except the evidence suggests this story is missing several crucial chapters.
The first chapter is about which trees we plant and where. A forest is not a forest is not a forest. Monoculture plantations of fast-growing exotics bear little resemblance to the biodiverse ecosystems they're meant to replace. Research has shown that rapid replanting with non-native species can actually degrade watershed health, reduce biodiversity, and create fire hazards rather than mitigating them. We've learned this lesson multiple times over the past thirty years. Yet the speed-focused model encourages volume metrics over ecological precision.
The second chapter involves timing and maintenance. A newly planted sapling is not a forest. It's a liability until it achieves structural maturity—a process that takes decades, not years. During that vulnerable window, these plantations require active management, water resources, and protection from pests and disease. When agencies under budget pressure cut corners on maintenance, they're left with rows of struggling vegetation rather than resilient ecosystems.
The third chapter is about local knowledge and consent. Indigenous and rural communities have managed forests for millennia. Yet many rapid reforestation initiatives sideline local decision-making in favor of centralized, one-size-fits-all approaches. The urgency to plant fast often crowds out the slower, more deliberative work of partnering with people who actually live in these landscapes.
I understand the anxiety driving this rush. Climate change is real. Wildfires are intensifying. Water systems are stressed. The instinct to act decisively feels morally necessary. Doing nothing while forests burn seems unconscionable.
But doing something poorly at scale is worse than doing something well at a measured pace.
What would restraint look like? It would mean conducting rigorous site assessments before planting begins. It would mean involving local communities as genuine partners, not beneficiaries of predetermined plans. It would mean accepting that some forests take centuries to mature properly, and that we can't rush that timeline without consequences. It would mean prioritizing protection of existing forests—which already function as complete ecosystems—alongside strategic restoration of degraded lands.
This doesn't mean abandoning reforestation efforts. It means divorcing them from the tyranny of speed.
The hard truth is that the forest crisis won't be solved by metrics on a spreadsheet. It will be solved by patient, place-based work that respects both ecological complexity and human communities. It requires courage to slow down when the instinct is to accelerate. But the evidence increasingly suggests that's what the moment demands.
We planted our way into this problem, in various ways. We shouldn't assume we can plant our way out of it, not without learning from past mistakes.
