Scientists monitoring the phenomenon warn that timing could prove catastrophic for a forest already stressed by human-caused climate warming and deforestation.

El Niño, a cyclical warming pattern in the Pacific Ocean, typically reduces rainfall across the Amazon basin. When El Niño peaks during the region's natural dry season, drought intensity compounds. The delay to the rainy season amplifies this risk, leaving the forest vulnerable to fire and dieback at precisely the moment when moisture is most needed.

The stakes extend far beyond Brazil's borders. The Amazon stores approximately 150 to 200 billion tons of carbon. Widespread forest die-off would release massive quantities of that carbon into the atmosphere, accelerating global warming. The forest also generates its own rainfall through transpiration, a process where trees release water vapor. Degraded forest loses this capacity, potentially pushing the Amazon toward an irreversible tipping point where it transitions from rainforest to savanna.
