Rising heat waves, air pollution from combustion engines, and energy price volatility all create vulnerability that electrification can address.
The 35% target faces substantial implementation challenges. Globally, electricity accounts for roughly 20% of final energy demand currently. Reaching 35% requires accelerated deployment of renewable generation capacity, grid modernization across developing economies, and consumer adoption of electric vehicles and heat pumps at unprecedented scale.
COP31, scheduled for 2025 in Turkey under Kurum's leadership, will provide the forum to advance this agenda through binding commitments from member nations. The electrification push complements existing renewable energy targets but extends further by making electricity generation the foundation of economy-wide decarbonization rather than one component of a diversified energy mix.
