There is a seductive narrative gaining ground among policymakers and climate advocates: if we simply let forests rewild themselves, they will sequester carbon, restore biodiversity, and solve a portion of our climate problem. The pitch is appealing. It requires less intervention than active forest management. It avoids the messy politics of timber harvesting and regulated use. It feels morally pure.
This trend is being sold as inevitable. It deserves more skepticism than it is getting.
Rewilding has real merits. Abandoning degraded land to natural succession can restore habitat and ecological function. In specific contexts, it makes sense. But as a dominant framework for climate-focused forest policy, it rests on assumptions that don't withstand close examination, and it obscures harder choices we actually need to make.
Start with the carbon math. Yes, regrowing forests capture carbon. The science is clear on this. But the timeline matters enormously, and it's often glossed over. A rewilded forest takes decades to become carbon-dense. In many regions, it takes a century or more to reach old-growth carbon storage capacity. We don't have that kind of time if we're serious about 2030 or 2050 climate targets.
There's also the complication of what kind of forest emerges. A rewilded landscape doesn't automatically produce a carbon-optimal forest. It produces whatever species composition and structure the local climate and seed sources allow. Sometimes that's ecologically wonderful. Sometimes it's a thicket of low-value growth. The carbon benefit can vary wildly depending on geography and historical land use.
Then there's the elephant in the room: active forest management, when done responsibly, can actually deliver more carbon sequestration faster. Younger, growing forests accumulate biomass more efficiently than old ones. Strategic harvesting followed by replanting can create a mosaic of age classes that continuously sequesters carbon while producing timber. Yes, this requires oversight. Yes, it can be abused. But the solution to bad forestry isn't to abandon all human involvement in forests. It's to do forestry better.
The rewilding narrative also has a convenient blindspot: it largely ignores the forests we already have. Protecting and enhancing existing forests, preventing conversion to other uses, and managing them actively for resilience should be priority number one. Yet these approaches get less romantic media coverage and attract less philanthropic funding than rewilding projects. A landscape being returned to "nature" photographs better than a responsibly managed working forest.
There's another risk embedded in this trend. Overreliance on rewilding as a climate strategy creates moral licensing. If we believe forests will save us if we just leave them alone, we're less likely to push hard for the emissions reductions that are actually the primary lever. Rewilding becomes a substitute for difficult policy changes, not a complement to them.
Consider the context we're operating in. Recent reporting suggests that maintaining low deforestation rates requires sustained government action and enforcement, not passive hope. Wildfires are intensifying in regions across Europe and elsewhere. In these conditions, the idea that we can simply step back and let nature take over feels disconnected from reality.
None of this is an argument against rewilding where it makes ecological sense. It's an argument against treating it as the primary framework for forest climate action. We need a portfolio approach: protecting existing forests, managing them actively for carbon and resilience, supporting sustainable timber production to reduce pressure on remaining forests, and yes, rewilding in specific contexts where it's genuinely beneficial.
The hard work of forest policy requires acknowledging tradeoffs, accepting human involvement, and resisting the temptation of single-solution thinking. Rewilding as part of the mix? Smart. Rewilding as destiny? Skepticism warranted.
