Here's the unpopular take: restraint, not speed, may be the smarter strategy in our rush to decarbonize.

I say this as someone who takes climate change seriously. The headlines speak for themselves. Europe's wildfires are intensifying. Malaria patterns are shifting across Africa in ways epidemiologists didn't predict a decade ago. The planetary stakes are real, and the urgency is justified.

Yet I'm increasingly concerned that our collective panic about moving "fast enough" on climate solutions is driving us toward decisions we'll regret.

The renewable energy buildout is a case in point. Countries worldwide are racing to deploy solar, wind, and battery capacity at unprecedented scales. There's genuine momentum. But this acceleration is happening without sufficient attention to supply chain vulnerabilities, grid integration challenges, and the material extraction costs we're merely outsourcing rather than solving.

When we prioritize speed over deliberation, we make mistakes. We approve projects without adequate environmental review. We commit to technologies before understanding their full lifecycle impacts. We create dependencies on supply chains we don't control. These aren't abstract concerns. They're real costs paid by real communities.

Consider the mineral extraction required for battery production. The demand is surging because we've decided electrification must happen now, at scale. But the mining operations following this demand aren't happening in carefully regulated jurisdictions with strong labor standards. They're happening wherever ore deposits exist, often in regions with minimal environmental oversight. We're solving a climate problem by creating ecological and human rights problems elsewhere.

This isn't an argument against renewable energy. It's an argument for doing it thoughtfully.

A slower, more deliberate approach would allow us to develop domestic supply chains. It would give us time to innovate on extraction methods and battery chemistry. It would let communities adapt to major infrastructure changes rather than having them imposed under crisis conditions. It would let us build consensus instead of creating backlash.

I recognize the counterargument. The climate crisis won't wait for perfect policy. Every fraction of a degree matters. Delaying renewable deployment costs lives.

Fair points, all of them. But there's a difference between accepting urgency and accepting recklessness. We can acknowledge that climate change is serious without concluding that speed is always our best response.

History shows that when we move too fast on major infrastructure transformations, we create problems we spend decades fixing. We've done this before. We can learn from it.

The current moment reminds me of a different kind of environmental rush: the biofuel boom of the early 2000s. Governments worldwide subsidized corn ethanol and biodiesel production with genuine climate intentions. The math seemed sound. The speed seemed necessary. The result was incentivized deforestation, food price spikes, and an inefficient fuel that didn't deliver the climate benefits promised. We wasted years and billions on a good-intentioned mistake made in haste.

What would a more restrained approach look like?

It would mean investing heavily in grid modernization and storage before we deploy maximum renewable capacity. It would mean building domestic supply chains for critical materials rather than assuming we'll always have access to global sources. It would mean stronger labor and environmental standards for extraction, even if it slows deployment. It would mean having honest conversations about which communities will host infrastructure and what they receive in return.

This approach would slow the renewable transition relative to current targets. Some would argue we can't afford that delay.

Maybe they're right. But I suspect we can afford it less than we can afford another round of well-intentioned, poorly executed environmental policy that creates new problems while addressing old ones.

Speed isn't always progress. Sometimes restraint is.
