The consensus is comforting: we need to decarbonize faster. Every climate conference, every heat emergency, every melting ice sheet reinforces the same message. Electrify the grid. Transition to renewables. Cut emissions by half by 2030. The numbers are stark. The imperative is clear.
But comfort is the enemy of progress.
The real question isn't whether we should decarbonize. It's why, after decades of knowing exactly what needs to happen, we're still debating the speed rather than executing at scale. And I think the answer lies in how we're counting what carbon actually costs us.
Recent reporting on European heat deaths illustrates the problem. When heat waves kill thousands, we trace causation backward: rising temperatures, greenhouse gases, carbon emissions. The logic is airtight. But our accounting stops there. We count the deaths. We note the carbon. We treat them as separate problems with a shared cause, rather than as evidence of a systemic failure in how we value carbon's true price.
Here's what breaks if we stop thinking this way: the entire economic case for incremental climate action.
Right now, the standard argument goes like this. Carbon has a cost. We call it the "social cost of carbon"—an estimate of the economic damage caused by each ton of CO2 released. Economists debate the number. Is it fifty dollars per ton? Eighty? One hundred fifty? The higher the figure, the more aggressive our climate action should be.
But this framework treats carbon as a pollutant to be priced and managed, not as evidence that our entire infrastructure is running on borrowed lives.
When a heat wave kills 2,700 people in France, we don't actually know how many of those deaths were directly attributable to the portion of warming caused by that year's additional carbon emissions. We can't isolate the dose-response relationship with precision. So we tend to soften the claim. We say the heat wave was "made worse by" climate change. We accept uncertainty. And uncertainty becomes an excuse for patience.
This is where the consensus becomes dangerous.
If we actually believed that every ton of carbon we emit today is directly responsible for fractional human deaths this year and next year, our response would look nothing like what we're doing. We wouldn't be discussing whether to transition by 2050. We wouldn't be negotiating timelines with polluting industries. We would treat ongoing carbon emissions the way we treat active public health threats: as requiring immediate intervention.
The discomfort of that framing is precisely why we avoid it.
Instead, we hide behind economic models that discount future suffering, that spread the consequences across decades, that treat a heat death in 2024 as marginally less important than an emission reduction in 2023. We've made climate change a problem of planetary accounting rather than present-day harm.
What breaks if we stop doing this? The political viability of slow transition.
You cannot simultaneously believe that carbon is killing people today and accept a decades-long implementation schedule for alternatives. Those two positions are incompatible. So we choose to believe the first statement while acting on the second. We split the difference through language: "urgent but realistic," "ambitious but achievable," "accelerated but fair."
These are the words of a civilization managing decline, not changing course.
The better question isn't whether we should decarbonize. It's whether we're willing to count the cost of not doing so in terms that make inaction unconscionable. And whether we're prepared to accept what that honesty demands.
