This trend is being sold as inevitable. It deserves more skepticism than it is getting.
We are witnessing the rapid growth of a seductive narrative: that technology can solve our ocean problems without requiring us to fundamentally change how we produce, consume, and discard. From corporate partnerships around plastic collection to emerging proposals for ocean alkalinity enhancement, the message is clear and appealing. Science and innovation will rescue us. The ocean will be saved by entrepreneurs and engineers, not by hard choices about industrial practices.
I am skeptical.
Don't misunderstand. I believe technology has a role to play in addressing ocean degradation. But the current trajectory of the ocean cleanup industry, as it's being packaged and promoted, risks becoming what I call "solution theater"—visible action that makes us feel better without addressing root causes.
Consider what we know about plastic in our oceans. The problem is real and devastating. Yet much of the public attention has shifted toward cleanup innovations: nets that catch floating debris, devices that extract microplastics from water, partnerships between brands and environmental organizations focused on removal. These projects receive funding, media coverage, and corporate support. They are easier to fund and market than the unglamorous work of reducing plastic production at the source.
The mathematics don't lie. The amount of plastic entering oceans annually far exceeds what any current or foreseeable removal technology could extract. We are treating the symptom while the disease spreads.
Similarly, conversations around ocean chemistry manipulation—the notion that we can chemically alter seawater to increase carbon absorption—are gaining momentum. The underlying science has merit. But we are being asked to accept as inevitable an approach that requires global coordination, unproven large-scale deployment, and potential unintended consequences. Meanwhile, the simpler intervention—reducing carbon emissions—remains politically difficult and therefore treated as secondary.
There is also a troubling power dynamic embedded in this narrative. When ocean solutions are framed as technical problems requiring corporate innovation, decision-making power flows toward wealthy nations and companies with research capacity and capital. This is exactly what French Polynesia's recent objection to seabed mining plans reflects: communities closest to ocean impacts often have the least say in technological interventions proposed in their waters.
The ocean cleanup industry benefits from a particular kind of modern mythology. It allows consumers to believe that purchasing products from brands partnered with cleanup initiatives absolves them of responsibility. It allows governments to delay harder policy decisions. It allows investors to fund technology rather than confront economic systems. Everyone wins except the ocean.
I am not arguing against innovation. I am arguing that we should examine what problems we choose to solve technologically and why. When we celebrate removal technologies while remaining passive about production rates, we reveal our priorities. When we invest in experimental chemical interventions before exhausting straightforward emissions reductions, we are choosing comfort over effectiveness.
The ocean needs real solutions. It needs reduced plastic production, not just better collection. It needs lower carbon emissions, not just chemical intervention. It needs stronger protections for indigenous and coastal communities who understand these waters best. It needs, frankly, less faith in the idea that we can buy our way out of systemic problems.
The ocean cleanup industry will continue growing. Entrepreneurs will secure funding. Partnerships will expand. News stories will celebrate innovations. And meanwhile, the trends that destroy ocean health will likely continue accelerating.
Until we are willing to question whether the solutions being sold as inevitable are actually the solutions we need, we should remain deeply skeptical.
