Here's an unpopular take: in our rush to decarbonize everything immediately, we're building carbon offset markets and nature-based climate solutions at a pace that virtually guarantees widespread failure and wasted resources.

I want to be clear about what I'm not saying. The climate crisis is real. The urgency is justified. We need to reduce emissions, and we need to do it now. But urgency and speed are not the same thing, and confusing them has become one of the quieter disasters of climate policy.

Consider what's happening in carbon offset markets. Demand has exploded as corporations race to meet net-zero commitments and governments pursue climate targets. The result? A frenzy of project approvals, verification schemes, and carbon credit sales that moves far faster than our ability to actually measure what works. A reforestation project approved last year might be inadequately monitored. A wetland restoration deal struck in haste might collapse within five years. But the credits have already been sold, already used to offset emissions elsewhere, and already shaped corporate strategies.

The problem isn't the projects themselves. It's that we're scaling them before we've done the harder work of getting them right.

Look at nature-based solutions specifically. Protecting forests, restoring peatlands, and regenerating grasslands genuinely can store carbon and build resilience. But these aren't simple engineering problems with predictable outcomes. A forest that absorbs carbon for twenty years might burn in year twenty-one. A wetland restoration might succeed in one region and fail in another due to factors that weren't obvious at project launch. These require long-term monitoring, adaptive management, and honestly, humility about what we don't yet understand.

The push for speed undermines all of that. When the metric becomes "how many offset credits can we generate this quarter," the incentive structure points away from careful implementation and toward volume. Projects get approved on projections rather than evidence. Monitoring gets treated as a compliance checkbox rather than genuine learning.

There's also a deeper concern: speed in scaling offsets can become a substitute for the harder work of emissions reduction. If a company can buy offsets to neutralize its emissions growth, why invest in genuinely difficult stuff like supply chain decarbonization or manufacturing overhaul? The offset market, moving too fast and with insufficient oversight, becomes a relief valve that lets pressure off the actual emissions reductions we desperately need.

This isn't an argument for doing nothing. It's an argument for doing things methodically.

The recent global shift toward clean power offers a useful contrast. The fact that renewable energy became the world's largest source of new energy capacity happened because the underlying technology matured, costs dropped, and markets stabilized. That was faster than many expected, but it wasn't rushed in the way that carbon offset expansion has been. There were feedback loops, course corrections, and learning built in.

We need the same approach to offsets and nature-based solutions. Smaller pilot projects. Rigorous monitoring over genuine timescales. Regional learning networks where practitioners actually share what doesn't work, not just what looks good in annual reports. International standards that demand evidence, not just promises.

Yes, this is slower. Yes, it feels like it's wasting time we don't have. But there's a paradox worth considering: a slower approach now could actually accelerate progress later by ensuring that the trillions of dollars flowing into offsets actually do what they're supposed to do, rather than creating a carbon credit bubble that eventually deflates and leaves policymakers and investors skeptical of the whole category.

The climate crisis demands urgency. It doesn't demand recklessness. We can pursue both decarbonization and rigor. But only if we're willing to occasionally slow down.
